On Tuesday night (December 13th), The supergroup hardcore band Off! played to a ruckus crowd at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver BC. Forming in 2009 with Keith Morris known lead singer for Circle Jerks/Black Flag fame with co-founder Dimitri Coats on guitars, Flying Lotus bassist Autry Fulbright and Ambrose Akinmusire jazz drummer Justin Brown. Free LSD is their 4th new album (Sept 30th) and are out in support on a small US and Canada run to support that album with hardcore L.A. group Zulu. They will continue in the spring with a 20 date tour in April 2023
Zulu as mention above formed LA that started the night with a tight short set that got the crowd in the right mood. Zulu has on vocals Anaiah Lei, guitarists Dez Yusuf and Braxton Marcellous, bassist Satchel Brown and drummer Christine Cadette. Anaiah Lei promised the Vancouver crowd that they will be back in 2023 and with a new album to boot. There is a bright future for this young act for fans of hardcore, grind, R&B and Reggae brand of music.
So, witnessing their performance OFF! was completely in their element, their show fine-tuned and riveting to the 300 plus that filled the Rickshaw Theatre. The dreadlocked iconic singer still rocking it at 67 years young who is know for his on stage prowess delivered on all counts with such killer songs as Slice Of The Pie, Killed To Be Heard, Red White & Black, Murder Corporation and Wiped Out during their 25-song ritual. Morris was in good company with the thunderous pounding of Justin’s drums which made most ears bleed, while the guitar licks of Dimitir and bass pounding of Autry left a great wall of sound in the theatre to the enthusiastic crowd. There were no posers at this show as most fans were here to see OFF! and get a glimpse of punk stardom which seems to be on a up surge lately. The general feeling that permeated through the crowd was a genuine love, respect for the music that played tonight and we can only hope they will come back to fill the void of a crowded punk rock show once again.
