This show has been an anticipated one by many. Getting to hear Beneath the Remains and Arise in its entirety with some surprises in between. At the beautiful 1926 Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles is where all of the chaos is going to take place.
The two piece band Healing Magic opens up the show with a bang! The lead singer is Igor Cavalera, one of Max Cavalera’s sons. He resemble’s his father but has the vocals to front a thrash band that hits harder than you would expect from a two piece band. Playing a quick, but heart pumping 30 minute set that got the crowd warmed up for the next band on tonight.
Cephalic Carnage, death metal legends that hail from Denver, Colorado, take the stage with incredible energy that had the crowd immediately form a pit. Lenzig’s vocals absolutely tear through the audience with a growl that you feel in the pit of your stomach. As Nick and Brian share one side of the stage, interacting with the crowd and moving around like it is nobody’s business. Since they are not just a death metal band but they have elements of jazz and grindcore that lends to their willingness to interact with the crowd. Before their last song “ Black Metal Sabbath “ started everyone in the band put on their black metal masks which included Nick’s horse mask and tons of energy not only coming from the band but also the crowd. Do not miss these guys if they come to a town near you because their live show is entertaining and most of all they sounded great after all these years.
“SE——PUL———TURA” was repeated endlessly by one guy because he knew what was about to happen and that was have his face melted by the awesomeness that is Max and Igor. Immediately as Max comes out and the first guitar string is strung the crowd goes absolutely off the wall. The photo pit was like a warzone filled with security guards, flying bodies and photographers. An excited crowd is never a bad thing especially when you can feel the excitement coming from every angle. The never ending pit just wouldnt stop along with all of the crowd surfers. There was one specific crowd surfer who was rolling on top of the crowd to avoid being pulled down by security. Still not sure how he did that but it looked like a blast! Starting the set off with Beneath the Remains and working their way into Arise. Max and Igor sounded tighter than ever with Igor’s drums sounding bombastic and punchy along with Max’s visceral vocals that you can recognize from a mile away.
Aside from songs off those two classic Sepultura albums, they played a couple covers that were unexpected but welcomed. From Slayer’s “Raining Blood” intro into" Troops of Doom" to “Orgasmatron” by the always amazing Motorhead and “ War Pigs “ by the one and only Black Sabbath. Not only did they do these songs justice but the fans were more than pleased with Max and Igor’s take on these classics. Nearing the 90 minute mark, the show ends with “Arise/Beneath the Remains” . The crowd wanted more and could clearly go another 90 minutes if Max and Igor would allow themselves to. Not only did they play a killer set but the energy the people brought matched that of the band. Hands down one of the best shows you will ever experince, so if I were you, I would not miss one of these shows because it is one hell of a good time.
