Unlike most shows that open up with a couple of bands, Failure decided to do something a little different this time around with a 30 minute snippet of their upcoming documentary that has been in the works since 2018. The documentary had interviews from Hayley Williams (Paramore), Maynard James Keenan ( Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle) , Tommy Lee ( Motley Crue), Butch Vig ( Garbage) , Troy Sanders ( Mastodon), Brian Albert ( Silversun Pickups), Margaret Cho, Jason Schwartzman and various other musicians and actors. Every single person discussed the importance of Failure to themselves and how important the band is to music. Knowing that all of these people shared an appreciation for a band that should never be forgotten and keeping them alive is beyond important for music and music fans. The preview ends with a new song “ Submarines” off their latest record “Wild Type Droid”. It was a seamless transition from the song being played on the documentary to the band coming out of the gate playing it to an excited and eager crowd.
"Submarines" delivering a good wake me up with its loud, punchy sound. Playing tracks from all of their albums made for quite a mixed set list that didn’t disappoint. Ken Andrews stated that the band wanted to create a set list that was unlike anything else they have played live before including some songs they have never played live before. Hearing songs like “Frogs” and “ Salt Wound “ was something that was unexpected, but welcomed. The band sounded tighter than ever and you can just feel the excitement they have been feeling to get back on the road and play this tour. I know there was something that everyone had in common as we were nearing the 45 minute mark in the set is that they haven’t played anything off of “ Fantastic Planet” their most beloved album and for good reason. It is almost as if Ken Andrews knew what everybody was thinking because he asked the crowd “ what album haven’t we played songs off of ? “ That is when everyone knew that we were about to have our faces melted.
Playing the last portion off this album, starting it off with “ Segue 3” all the way through “Daylight”. You can literally pick any song off “ Fantastic Planet “ and the fans would be stoked to hear it. “ Stuck on you” live was that moment where a lot of people felt a sense of familiarity and comfort because it just transports you to that exact moment when you first heard that song leaving nothing but a smile on your face. Possibly the band’s heaviest song and quite an experience hearing all of those magnificent sounds that they created come together to form what we know as “ Heliotropic” . Being able to catch Failure live after 30 years of being a band was an experience that will never be forgotten and pleased to see them sound better than ever.
