Got into town, lined up at The Rickshaw to get in for 7pm, but was surprised there wasn't much of a lineup, but then most come for the headlining bands. Also means they miss out on some excellent openers and more.
First up THE HALLOWED CATHARSIS (Vancouver), they call themselves Progressive Metal storytellers, who formed back in 2013. The one person who had my attention their whole set was the singer, holy hell, she moves, and moves everywhere, and doesn't trip or fall, I couldn't beleive it. I wouldn't mind having just a touch of that energy. Her vocals were harsh growling, and she sure has that perfected. The rest of the band did an amazing job too, they had the talent and they executed it well. A great opener to get the crowd going. The only problem I saw was the fans, they didn't mosh, and trust me this was a band to get a great mosh pit going.
Next was suppose to be KILLITOROUS, but sadly their vehicle had issues, and were not able to make it. Next time guys.
Stepping up on stage next is ABYSMAL DAWN (Los Angeles) and American Death Metal band who formed back in 2003. They are also the last ones I saw before Covid hit. This is the band I came for, I don't miss them when they come town, and neither should you. If you like Death Metal, then this is the band you want. I am never disappointed in their set/performance. This is a band, that works hard together, performs together well, and it shows. Charles Elliott, Eliseo Garcia, James Coppolino, Vito Petroni make up this head banging crew, and they came and delivered without fault. They played a variety of songs, and each played exceptionally well. But they always do. Sadly though, no mosh pit, don't know why, this band always has a crazy ass pit going on while they play. It's like you want to shake them and wake them up, but, on the other hand, I could stand up front and really enjoy their set. Even without a pit, they gave their fans their total all 150% worth. Abysmal Dawn is on of the best American Death Metal bands in my opinion.
TOMBS (New York), heavy metallers who formed in 2007 hit next. I thought it was kind of dark, but at least the blue gave a great ambiance to their playing. The fans you could tell really enjoyed them, even though from where I was there wasn't any moshing yet. They played many songs to the fans enjoyment. Not sure, but think this is a first for me to see them, I enjoyed their set, and they were not rusty, meaning they rehearshed and knew their instruments/songs, and did a great job of spilling it out to the crowd. Well done.
Last on stage tonight is ORIGIN (Kansas), and they are definitely Technical Death Metal. You want speed, technical, unique structures, then this is who you want. They had a lot of songs that pleased the fans tonight, while I was there, again no mosh pits. I don't know what happened to this Vancouver crowd. They need to wake up and smell the Metal. These guys put so much energy into their set, and with great songs, you can't go wrong. I know everyone enjoyed this set, I did. They are the ones that drew the big crowd tonight as well, I understand why.
I was surprised that not many there tonight, this was a full on metal show, which usually brings in many people, but I think the problem was, just way too many shows in the last while, yes it is great to be back out there doing what you love, but the fans, well they have suffered as well, so it probably comes down to which shows they can see, sadly not as many as they want to. A lot of shows were on the same night, makes it difficult for the fans to choose, and hard for the bands touring to try and make some money. Hopefully things will pick up and return to normal soon.
Great night of Metal all around, especially since it might be awhile for the Vancouver metal scene, to have it's next larger scale concert in a little bit. Good that we got our dose of metal now, while we can.
